Join Insurance for Good on September 29 at 12:00 PM ET for a special conversation about insuring fisheries. Recent fishery disasters have highlighted a persistent gap in the financial tools available to U.S. fishing communities. While federal disaster assistance can provide critical support after major losses, payments may take years to reach affected communities, and fisheries generally lack the kinds of production-based insurance and risk-management programs available to U.S. agriculture.
This webinar will explore what a more proactive system of fisheries risk management could look like in the United States. Using the collapse of the Bering Sea snow crab fishery as a starting point, speakers, Jamie Goen and Chris Anderson, will discuss the impacts of fishery disasters, the role and limitations of existing disaster assistance, and lessons from the evolution of U.S. crop insurance and agricultural commodity programs.
Jamie Goen is the Executive Director at Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers and Chris Anderson is a Fisheries Economist at the UW School of Aquatic Fisheries Science.
