Research for Practice: Improving Disaster Insurance Access and Experience

In our third webinar on July 14, Professor Daniel Schwarcz will present his recent research on the legal and regulatory constraints that limit insurers' capacity to advance climate adaptation and resilience, along with concrete reforms that state lawmakers and regulators could adopt in response. Drawing on several prior articles, he will outline options for promoting greater standardization of homeowners insurance policies, improving the resolution of consumer claims disputes, fostering insurer competition that aligns with broader social objectives, and strengthening insurers’ incentives to reward and support climate resilience and adaptation efforts by individual homeowners and the communities in which they live.

Daniel Schwarcz is the Fredrikson & Byron Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota.
